Proving Influencer ROI — The Attribution You Set Up Before You Ship
"It seems to be working but I can't prove it" is the number one reason influencer budgets get cut. The tracking has to exist before the first package leaves.
Influencer budgets rarely get cut because performance was bad. They get cut because nobody could explain performance in numbers. When a CFO asks what the program returned and the answer is 'three million impressions,' that line item shrinks next quarter. Attribution is not something you bolt on after the posts go live — it is something you install before you ship product.
Why influencer performance disappears from your dashboard
Instagram and TikTok content is consumed inside the app. People rarely click a link; they search later, save the post, or buy a week after seeing it. Last-click analytics therefore credit influencer marketing with close to nothing. The contribution is real, the measurement is not — this is what people mean by dark social.
Three overlapping trackers, installed pre-launch
- Unique discount codes per creator, which capture off-platform conversions
- Landing UTMs on story and bio links, tagged by campaign and creator
- A one-line post-purchase survey asking how the customer heard about you
Layered, these cover each other's blind spots: codes catch what last-click misses, the survey recovers dark social, and the three sources cross-validate.
Set a baseline or the number means nothing
To calculate real ROI, subtract baseline revenue — what you would have sold anyway — from campaign-period revenue. Then add the two things most teams forget: the production value of content you can reuse as paid creative, and the residual effect, typically two to four weeks of elevated branded search after the campaign. Programs that look unprofitable on first-month ROAS often clear comfortably once both are counted.
Write goals that survive review
"Increase brand awareness" is easy to cut. "200 new customers attributed by discount code at a CAC under $18" is not. Rewriting the objective line of your brief in measurable terms is, on its own, the cheapest budget defense available.

Spotting Fake Followers — A Five-Minute Check Before You Pay
An account with 100K followers and 200 likes per post is mostly a number. Five minutes of checking catches the obvious frauds before your budget does.
Don't Let Good Creator Content Die After One Post
A collaboration video that performed well is a proven ad creative. Most of the return on influencer marketing comes from the second use, not the first.
